Pizza Express – Winter Menu 2015!

This entry was posted in Uncategorized.

A couple of week’s ago, after a festive skate at Somerset House, we popped into our fave for the whole family restaurant, Pizza Express. We’d never been to the one on The Strand before and I am always a little skeptical about eating in central London because often I find restaurants think they don’t have to bother, knowing their trade is mainly with tourists and not expecting repeat customers, however, it was just as Pizza Express should be and everything was as perfect as it is in our local.

We often visit Pizza Express as a family because I find it provides everything we need. Great food that appeals to all of us and with a big emphasis on the little ones having a great time too. The children’s menu, at £6.95 includes a dough ball starter, pizza or pasta main, desert and a baminoccino which, for my two, seems to be the highlight! They often order a second one and not once have I ever been charged for the extra. We find restaurants can vary but are usually of a very high standard. The only time I’ve had a truly diabolical experience was a long time ago at Westfield in White City which was disappointing as usually, even if something goes wrong with the food on occasions (and of course we’re all human so sometimes a mistake can be made) the staff are brilliant and that just makes up for it as they sort things immediately. But of course it was just one visit in many and it didn’t put us off! I might not go back to the one in White City again but we probably go once a month for a treat elsewhere and we often cash in our Tesco Clubcard points to pay for it which is a super bargain!

The menu, stickers and hat always keep the children entertained while we order and wait for our food. Even if they DON'T use them as they were intended!

Florence loved the festive things in her menu and we all enjoyed the quiz on the adult menu too!
Florence loved the festive things in her menu frm this visit and we all enjoyed the quiz on the adult menu too which had questions the whole family could answer and was great fun!

For our festive treat meal out we had a great waitress, as per usual, who was very accommodating and allowed us to sit in a big booth when I asked even though there were only four of us and it was at a busy period. We also changed our minds after ordering and she showed no bother at amending it for us. Then of course the food, well, the food was exactly as we wanted it to be – we make funny amendments to the menu to bespoke things just as we like, we are awkward you see but PE are really great at getting it right!

I love how each restaurant is decorated individually and this one on The strand is full of mirrored walls!

I had assumed, as with most of the special offers in PE, that the festive menu deal wouldn’t work with Tesco Clubcard points but actually, this time, it does and for £19.99 (I think in other venues the deal is cheaper but this was central London prices) you can choose any starter and then a main from the main menu as well as a glass of prosecco. I am a bit of a prosecco connoisseur (well, I drink rather a lot of it anyway) and PE prosecco is one of the most deliciosu I have ever tried! Not too sweet but not dry either, just right and with a real fruity yet non acidic taste. For an extra £3 you can even add a desert so it’s a pretty awesome deal and with the Piccolo menu for the childrena and the destive deal for us the meal was an utter bargain! We added a few extras that we couldn’t resist (we’re very piggy) and had an utterly amazing meal yet again! Like I said, you can choose any main from the menu but we did decide to try the new winter menu dishes and I have to say, sprouts on pizza are amazing – who knew?!

The prosecco deal for Christmas just had to be taken!

Choosing!
Choosing!

I do review for Pizza Express from time to time where they gift me a meal in return for an honest write up about our experience but on this occasion we absolutely weren’t asked to write anything and we saved our Clubcard points up so that we could have this treat. They were well spent I have to say and we can’t wait to go back again! We may very well go back in between but Florence usually chooses to go for her birthday meal on New Year’s Eve so I’m sure we will be back then at least!

Starters of one of my menu favourites, the Brischetta Con Funghi, The new Calamari (deliciously crispy) and the children ALWAYS go for the dough balls with lashings and lashings of garlic butter!

The children are creatures of habit and go for the La Rein without mushrooms for Jimmy and Florence sticks to an old staple of the garlic butter pasta that's no longer on the menu but which every restarant we've ever asked has been happy to cook for her anyway!

We decided to try some new winter menu Christmas additions and Jonny enjoyed the Spiced lamb Romana. Tomato pestorissa sauce, mozzarella and fresh chopped tomato, red onions and parsley compliment it and he said it was delicious but not as delciious as mine - Ha! I love to win the food choice competition we have between ourselves!

I had the sprout and pancetta romana with chestnut mushrooms, red onions, pine kernels, mozzarella, fresh parsley and a free-range egg. I LOVED it, absolutely loved it and the sprouts gave it a really lovely flavour that you wouldn't imagine. There;s another pizza on the menu with sprouts too and I had spent a long time debating which one to go for but I'm glad I went for this one and I'd have it again. The only thing I would say though is that I don't think it needs the egg. I think next time I'll opt out of that being included but that's the beauty, PE don't mind when you do and are always happy to do what you like if they can!

Our 'must have' sides of the moment are the polenta chips and the potato nocciola which are golden fluffy potato balls, baked and then finished with Gran Milano cheese and fresh parsley as well as a splash of truffle oil if you like it - we do!

Ad then of course it was time for desert - something Jonny wigged out of the rookie but the rest of us squeezed one in having saved some pizza to take home in a box! I've been waiting to try the salted caramel profiteroles for ages and they didn't disappoint and the children had sundaes with their bambinoccinos!

Yum!
Yum!

I have to also say that we very much recommend the new Snowball Doughballs which are on the destive menu too! We didn’t try them on this visit but a few days earlier when they launched, Pizza express were giving them away for FREE so we thought it wouldn have ben rude not to!

Snowball Doughball Day!

We love Pizza Express and this visit was one of the best we’ve had!

We were not paid or promoted to write this review.

  1. First of all, I love the photo’s, it’s like I’m at the restaurant with you, I do love good photo’s, especially of food, only they make me want to snack before dinner! It’s great to hear you was allowed to sit in a booth too, I’m always weary of people staring at us when the three of us eat out and we’re sat on a big table, however sometimes it’s the only option! In regards to what you said about the mistake at White City, I know how things can put you off, I’ve not visited a well known restaurant since a bug incident, which was totally not no ones fault, or at least I hope not but it’s put me off sadly! One last thing, thanks for mentioning the Tesco clubcard vouchers work with PE, I never knew, plus I need to check my balance! xx

  2. Great post. We are huge fans of Pizza Express too, and think the Festive menu is great. Will definitely popping in soon to try it based on this write up!
