Match And More At Morrisons!

Last week Jimmy and I headed off to Camden to meet with the Morrisons Team in one of their largest stores in the capital. The night before had seen a new television advertising campaign, fronted by Ant and dec, to let the country know all about Morrisons new Match and More card.

Most supermarkets have a price matching scheme and as you leave the store with a receipt that says ‘You could have saved 12p elsewhere’ You realise you only have 14 days to make sure you don’t lose this scrappy piece of paper and hand it over to the cashier on your next shop’. Seriously though, who actually remembers? Even when I’ve had substantial amounts like £1.50 I’ve still forgotten, which is EXACTLY what they want you to do of course!

Apparently some supermarkets don’t even have an independent regulator and do it all themselves which means that basically, they can say what they like and how would you ever know? I’ve never really invested much interest in the price matching schemes as I have thouht it’s all much of a muchness and who are they matching to anyway? Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s? Yep, I think those ones match to each other, or some of each other but not all… And if they’re all pretty much the same anyway then who cares? I only ever notice massive savings when I shop in Aldi and they don’t match to Aldi so…

If they don’t match to Aldi and they don’t match, as far as I can see, to own brand products which are the ones I mostly buy, then no wonder it hasn’t made much of an impact on me.

But at Morrisons they are doing things a little differently… They have a new price matching scheme and I think it might just be something we all need to know about. Instead of the amount being given on your receipt (to be lost) anything you could have saved will be accrued on a card. The card can also accrue extra points on other things you buy if they have a sign promoting extra points. It’s not like a Tesco Clubcard where everything helps build but there are very definitely lots of items with points of a large amount. If you see 500 match and More points on an item then it means 50 pence will go straight on to your card. That building up with any price matching points will last not 14 days but a whole year and when your total points earned reaches a £5 value you are sent a voucher to spend.

It’s worth noting that this scheme at Morrisons will match to other supermarket deal such as BOGOFFS and 241’s and they do this by calculating the average price of a product even if you only buy 1. I’m pretty impressed with that I have to say!

On top of this and probably the most important part to remember is that they at Morrisons are matching to not only branded products but own brands too. Not their lowest value products either, but mid range. Even better is that they are not only matching to the usual suspects but also to Aldi AND Lidl. Now that’s impressive!

Along with the card comes an app which let’s you create a list to tick off as you get your shopping and it also will show you ALL offers when you type in a product type, including those with points and 241 deals so that you can make an informed choice on which offer is best for you.

Morrisons treated me to a shop where I got to try out the app and use my card. I deliberately chose items with extra points where it worked out cheaper and I save some money on the price match scheme too. At the end of my shop which I’d calculate to be about twenty quid more than it was based on Tesco prices in my head the receipt told me I could have saved another £2.50 elsewhere and the points had been added to my card. I’m already over half way to my first £5 voucher and I saved about £20 to my usual supermarket. I can only reckon my price saving was down to them matching to Aldi!

Brilliant!

We are very keen on the new Match and More scheme at Morrisons but some of the other draws to shopping there for us are the fact they have trolley park cupboards for our buggy, the cafe serves awesome cakes and we LOVE the fresh fish counter!

We were treated to a shop at Morrisons to try out the new app and Match and More cards.
