Farmhouse Kitchen Love!

I live in a Victorian terrace conversion flat. We have the upstairs part of the house which would have been beautiful as a complete home but as a flat is challenging when it comes to space.

The rooms aren’t really the right size and don’t go with each other because, well, it’s really only half a house, only intended to ever be half a house and as an upstairs I’m sure it would have been fantastic. Our living room, which would once have been the master bedroom, is wonderfully big and has a great big bay window overlooking the Wanstead Flats – it’s what we call the money room, it will sell the flat for sure! The rest of the rooms are ok for size at best and rotten at their worst which is, it has to be said, the kitchen.

The kitchen is basically a shoe box. One person fills it, the work tops are gone in the put down of a bag and our one lonely drawer is half sized. We’ve been creative with space, there are lots of things hanging on the walls, the microwave sits on top of the fridge and we took the door off the room then put a book shelf on the wall opposite in an attempt to extend the area… But, I’m tired of being creative and to be frank, there’s not much more I can be creative with.

This is one of the reasons why I am looking forward to our move. We’re looking and hopefully, although we’ll be out of London (but close enough by to still be here for the day) we shall have a house soon and it’s the kitchen that I’m dreaming of making perfect! I would love a big farm house style kitchen with enough space to fit a table. I can imagine myself waltzing round it in an A-Line summer skirt as I bake something yummy (think Jessica Lange in the film Tootsie when her and Dustin Hoffman were visiting her Father’s farm).

Ok, so I might not be able to bake but I’ve watched enough Kirstie’s Homemade Home to know I want a bit of gingham bunting and some beautiful crockery on a side board! I’d also LOVE an Aga. Can you imagine going from a tiny box of a cook room to a kitchen like that? One which smells of fresh Freesias (my favourite flowers) and has burning scented candles, an old fashioned set of scales on the side and maybe I could even wear a 1950’s style pinny!

All these things (Aga aside, we might have to buy somewhere with one in situ for that) are all perfectly affordable. Little bits and bobs picked up and perfectly placed… Yep, I think my farmhouse kitchen could be more than just a pipe dream some day soon! Here’s hoping!
